Luxury fashion houses have been so creative recently in how they’re presenting their new collections virtually.  But perhaps one of the coolest and literally most playful executions is by Spanish-founded brand Balenciaga.

The Paris-based fashion house launched its Fall 2021 collection through an online game. And just like most video games, players get to choose their characters and get to be a part of a virtual world. Well for this one, a virtual luxury fashion world where you can sit on the front row, get close to the models and circle around the fashion creations for further details while inside this virtual-reality runway show.

The VR world is called Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow, an adventure set in the year 2031. Characters navigate through different scenarios while wearing replicas of Balenciaga’s Fall 2021 collection pieces.

It might look like it’s all just fun and games, but the Balenciaga virtual game subtly shows and educates the players about the importance of the slow return to a better balance between nature and the fashion industry.

The brand’s utilitarian style vision reinforces multi-purpose fabrics, upcycling and slow fashion. Like for example, in the future, an animal fur is no longer appropriate for people to buy, and a puffer is embroidered with recycled fabrics.

A continuation from last season, creative director Demna Gvasalia gave old materials new life by shredding leftover fabrics and embroidering them on down jackets to give them a fluffy, fur-like appearance. The collection was meant to imagine fashion in the year 2031, with an emphasis on comfort, recycling and street cool. Seriously, how awesome is this collection?
