The Metropolitan Theater was filled with music, performances, and plenty of K-Pop love on September 15 as the 35th Philippine-Korea Cultural Exchange Festival brought Filipino and Korean communities together for an afternoon of culture and entertainment.

Hosted by the United Korean Community Association in the Philippines, the annual festival marked another chapter in the longstanding relationship between the Philippines and South Korea, this time through the universal language of music and the arts.

The celebration officially opened with a traditional Gong Ceremony, joined by Ambassador Lee Dong-gy of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Christian John Serrano, Chief Administrative Officer of the MET Theater Operations Division, and representatives from various associations and academic institutions.

From there, the Metropolitan Theater was filled with performances that reflected the lively cultural exchange at the heart of the event. Filipino P-Pop girl group KAIA took the stage, while Korean acapella group EXIT brought its own energetic sound to the celebration.

One of the afternoon’s biggest crowd-pleasers was the K-Pop Cover Contest, where performers took on some of the most recognizable songs from the Korean music scene. As contestants performed, audiences sang along to familiar tracks, turning the theater into a shared celebration of a genre that has found a passionate following in the Philippines.

EXIT also kept the energy going with its dynamic acapella performances, eventually returning for an encore featuring beloved Disney songs.

The four-hour program offered more than just entertainment. It highlighted how cultural exchange can happen in ways that feel natural and accessible, whether through a song, a performance, or simply an audience coming together to enjoy something they love.

The festival also reflected the long history behind Philippine-Korean relations. What began with the Philippines’ support for South Korea during the Korean War and the years that followed has grown into a broad partnership encompassing diplomacy, trade, education, and cultural exchange.

Today, K-Pop, Korean dramas, food, fashion, and other aspects of Korean culture have become familiar parts of everyday life for many Filipinos. At the same time, Filipino culture and talent continue to find audiences in Korea and beyond, creating more opportunities for both countries to connect through the arts.

The festival wrapped up with the announcement of the K-Pop Cover Contest winners and a raffle draw, with attendees taking home prizes and tokens from the event’s sponsors.

Thirty-five editions in, the Philippine-Korea Cultural Exchange Festival continues to show that cultural ties are not built only through official meetings and diplomatic milestones. Sometimes, they grow through a song everyone knows, a performance that gets the crowd singing, and a theater filled with people celebrating cultures that may be different, but can still meet beautifully on the same stage.
