This year’s MTV Video Music Awards took a different route compared to its previous 36 years as it aired during a global pandemic. Hosted by Keke Palmer, the VMAs was held at different COVID-safe outdoor arenas in Brooklyn, New York–limiting its physical audience. To ensure extra safety precautionary measures, most performances of the night were pre-recorded in their respective stages, the carpet event and videos of celebrities presenting the awards were also taken prior the event.

The awards show was marked as one of the first major events to take place in New York City– considered to be a COVID19 hotspot in the US– after the worldwide pandemic broke out. The VMAs is known for having celebrities dressed in iconic and flashy outfits in the past. And this year, no pandemic can stop our favorite stars from bringing out their best fashion expressions that will surely be recorded in style history. Here are our top red carpet picks of the night:

Lady Gaga

As always, Lady Gaga went all out for the VMAs white carpet. The ‘Rain On Me’ hitmaker paid homage to her Chromatica album by sticking to its out-of-this-world aesthetic. Mother Monster wore a futuristic silver dress by Area complete with a space helmet and her iconic go-to platform boots.

Miley Cyrus

Daring in the most fashionable way, Miley Cyrus is known to turn heads by wearing controversial red carpet outfits in the past. The ‘Midnight Sky’ singer, who also performed during the event, arrived at the VMAs virtual white carpet event in a black embroidered sheer dress by Thierry Mugler, with matching gloves and black strappy heels.

Keke Palmer

We certainly cannot forget tonight’s host: Keke Palmer. Appearing mostly in a big green screen studio for a different set up of the award’s show this year, the former Nickelodeon star was seen wearing a light blue mini dress with a bow accent and lined with crystals.

Sofia Carson

The ‘Pretty Little Liars’ actress arrived in a feisty red gown with an asymmetrical neckline designed by Giambattista Valli. The singer/actress completed the look with Vhernier earrings and a diamond ring.

Nicole Richie

Simple yet elegant, the silhouette of Nicole Richie’s dress was a scene-stealer. The ‘Simple Life’ reality TV star arrived in a lime green long back dress designed by Cong Tri. The ensemble was topped off with a spiky tiara.

Bella Hadid

The supermodel arrived wearing a daring sheer top designed by Nensi Dojaka, Hadid wore the same outfit to present the MTV Tricon award to Lady Gaga.

Doja Cat

The ‘Say So’ singer who also won the night’s Push Best New Artist category walked the MTV VMAs white carpet in a short Versace holographic dress, embellished with edgy floral details. The look was completed with Jewelry by Ofira, as well as studs by Lorraine Schwartz.
