For some parts of our bodies, achieving smooth skin means going hair-free. While you may choose to shave your hair easily, this hair removal technique can result to some bumps and ingrown hairs, and that’s not pretty.

That’s why waxing has been more suggested by skin professionals for hair removal when it comes to areas such as underarms, legs, arms, upper lip and vajay, in comparison to shaving.

According to New York-based dermatologist Angela Lamb, M.D. and director of Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology Faculty Practice in an interview with Elle Magazine, waxing has indeed skincare benefits.

“When wax is applied to your skin and then removed, it peels away any excess dead skin cells with it. The results are like a two-for-one wax and exfoliation treatment. Waxing can actually simultaneously remove some of the top layers of dead skin cells, which can make your skin feel smoother,” Dr. Angela said.

Aside from achieving nice, smooth skin, waxing can make you go hair-free for longer.

“Because the hair comes out by the root, it grows back in much slower than shaving, so you stay nice and smooth longer,” Lamb added.

Here are more reasons why you should consider waxing when trying to go hair-free:

1. Less and finer regrowth of hair

With shaving, the hairs are cut off close to skin level. Because waxing allows for the hairs to be pulled from the roots, the best known benefit of waxing is that the hairs don’t grow back as quickly. Some can enjoy being smooth-free for three to four weeks.

Aside from longer time for regrowth, waxing can also result to the growth of finer hairs. Waxing removes the hairs at the follicles, which means that when the hair regenerates and grows back, it does so with a finely tapered end. Some individuals even end up with a sparser coverage of hair with waxing over time. With waxing for a long period of time, one can end up not feeling as hairy once the hair grows back.

2. Smoother finish

Waxing experts can help you go totally hair- and smooth-free, as shaving can cause missed areas since you cannot possibly shave everything alone especially when it comes to private areas.

Shaving can also result to stubbles and bumps on your skin. Meanwhile, waxing is like exfoliation.

A build-up of dead skin cells can cause dryness, outbreaks, bumps and blemishes. With waxing, all these are removed for you as part of the process. The result is that the waxed area is smooth, radiant, clean and fresh. But an important note to remember, don’t exfoliate 48 hours before and after your waxing appointment as this can make your skin more sensitive.

3. No shaving rash

Shaving can cause rashes for some people, an inflammation of the skin caused by irritation from the blade and the shaving technique. With waxing, you can avoid this for three to four weeks at a time– giving your skin a chance to rest, rejuvenate and calm down.
